Termite Protection – Is Your Home Safe?

Posted by Keith Ruebeling On March 1st

Do you know how much damage termites can do to a home? The effects of a termite infestation can be devastating to a family.

Termite Damage to Floor

Your home is supposed to be a safe place for your family, but hidden behind the walls and ceiling, there may be a problem growing that you’re completely unaware of. Termite protection isn’t something people really like to think about, but that fact is living in Florida, termites are a real threat. Even if you’re living in a CBS home, the rafters in your roof are still susceptible.

Termite treatment and repairing termite damage (which is not covered by insurance) can be quite a financial burden. If your home becomes structurally unsound, you may even have to relocate until the effected wood is replaced. It can be a lot for one family to take!

With the approach of termite swarming season in early spring, we thought we’d remind everyone that Florida residents should have a termite inspection done at least once a year. Of course, the best way to get total termite protection is to prevent an infestation in the first place.

Be proactive! By contacting a Quality Pro Company, along with following some basic dos and don’ts, you’ll be able to ensure your family’s peace of mind and keep termites from invading your personal space.

We recommend installing Sentricon Colony Elimination System® with Always Active Technology. It’s a unique yet highly effective baiting program that provides continuous 24/7 protection against subterranean termites and is the only termite control product ever to win the Green Chemistry Challenge Award, a top federal environmental honor.

Knowing your home is protected against these destructive creatures is a comforting feeling. Especially if you’re thinking about selling your home, since installing the Sentricon System® increases your home’s value and saleability.

Here are some additional tips for protecting your property against termites:

  • Be on the lookout for mud tubes, discarded termite wings and other signs of termite activity.
  • Remove any dead trees or stumps near your home.
  • Shrubs, mulch and other landscaping should be at least 2 feet from the foundation of your home.
  • Try not to use wood mulch.
  • Wooden fences, planter boxes and other wood items should stay at least 2 feet from the foundation.
  • Keep soil at least 6 inches away from the bottom of stucco or other siding.
  • Place sprinkler heads more than 2 feet from the foundation and make sure they don’t wet the walls.
  • Divert air-conditioner condensation, sump discharge and other water away from the foundation of your home.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts and keep splash blocks in place.

The more you know about termites, the better you’ll be able to protect yourself from them. That’s why we’ve created two free downloadable eBooks: 5 Things You Need to Know About Subterranean Termites and 7 Tips to Prevent Termites From Eating You Out of House and Home.

Larue Pest Management offers two solutions for protecting your home from termites. You can install Sentricon Colony Elimination System® on it’s own, or to cut down on the upfront cost of installation, you can bundle it with our pest control program called HomeGuard Pest Prevention. The HomeGuard program is a cost effective, guaranteed, comprehensive solution for pest removal and termite protection for your home.

Termites can be really dangerous, and eat your home from the inside out. There isn’t a ton that you can do individually I think to combat such a large infestation. Getting the professionals on your side to come help you deal with the problem and keep you and your home safe should be a top priority.

    Hey Keith,

This is a great article. As a Pest Control Services Professional and owning my own pest control business, I run into a lot of people that wait way too long to have their home checked for termite damage, and most of the time it is too late. This is a great article. I appreciate you taking the time.

Termite treatment is a job for professionals. A possible exception would be if a mailbox post, sandbox or other small wooden object not attached to the house was infested. “Do-it-yourself” products, sold to homeowners at retail stores or bought over the internet, will seldom eradicate an existing termite problem.

When it comes to being a homeowner or owning property in general with wood on it, it’s very important to have you property inspected for termites regularly.
