Looking to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants in Cape Coral?

This is the eighth installment of 15 Household Bugs in SW Florida That May Freak You Out, which can be downloaded from our free eBook library.

If you have large, reddish brown ants in your home, you might have carpenter ants. These ants are often half an inch long and have chunky body parts. Their size can be intimidating and even a little freaky. Many carpenter ants are wingless, but large colonies do have ants with wings.

As their name implies, carpenter ants love wood. Unlike termites however, the Florida carpenter ant will not eat the wood in your home. Unfortunately, they love to nest in your attic and in wall voids.

In most cases, carpenter ants have a main nest outside your home in a nearby tree or stump. However, given enough time, they may establish a secondary nest inside your home. Carpenter ants prefer wood that is rotting or wet. If the wood in your house is not water damaged, you are less likely to have a problem with these ants. With proper home maintenance (fixing leaky plumbing and keeping wood painted and sealed), you will reduce your chances of an infestation.

Homeowners have a very difficult time fixing carpenter ant problems on their own because the primary nest can be hard to find. Often, you need a Cape Coral pest control professional that is knowledgeable about carpenter ant habitats and preferences to help to get rid of them permanently.

We do find it helpful when homeowners keep a careful eye on their carpenter ants before calling us. Keep notes on things like:

7 Tips to Prevent Termites from Eating You Out of House and Home

In the past we’ve heard our customers say “I live in a concrete block house. I don’t have to worry about termites.” Or “I live in a suburban area. We don’t have termites near our home.”

My response is usually the same. What are the rafters of your roof made of? Usually the response is the same: Wood. Termites don’t care if you live in a cow town or if you live in the “burbs.” They are equal opportunity wood eaters.

Over the past few months we have given you a few helpful pointers on how you can reduce your exposure to subterranean termites and the severe damage that they can inflict upon your homestead.

Termite extermination is not a pretty business. In fact, many people despise the thought of creepy crawlies, let alone trying to rid them from their houses. But we’ve been in the Fort Myers pest control business since 1978 and we’re happy to help you get rid of termites. Here’s what you should know about subterranean termites:

Termite Control

This is the 7th of 7 Tips to Prevent Termites from Eating You Out of House & Home which can be downloaded for FREE from my library of eBooks.

There is a Nobel Prize winning scientist named Steven Chu that has discovered a termite control method that turns them from being home eating pests, to a limitless fuel source. He’s not claiming that termites can save the world. However, he does believe that they can lead to cheap, clean-burning, and virtually limitless fuel.

The US Department of Energy is currently researching ways to replace fossil fuels with renewable sources of cleaner energy. Termites are considered a possible way to reach this goal through something called metagenomics (the study of metagenomes, genetic material recovered directly from environmental samples).

So, how is it possible to turn these pests into power sources?

An annual termite inspection by a pest control professional is the best way to head off these pests before they eat you out of house and home. However, you should make it a point to do your own “mini-inspections” during routine maintenance and household chores.

Here are some tips for what to look for:

Prevent Termite Damage

This is the 5th of 7 Tips to Prevent Termites from Eating You Out of House & Home which can be downloaded for FREE from my library of eBooks.

The best method for pest prevention is proper maintenance of your home. Try to eliminate and prevent conditions that are conducive to termite activity in or around your home, such as unmaintained landscaping or wood structures lying near the foundation.

In areas of high volume of termite damage such as Southwest Florida, termite prevention should be a part of annual home maintenance. This will help ensure that you detect termite infestations as early as possible.

Here are some preventative measures you can take to help you prevent termite damage:

Subterranean Termites

This is the 4th of 7 Tips to Prevent Termites from Eating You Out of House & Home which can be downloaded for FREE from my library of eBooks.

Termites are highly social insects. Within the colony, hundreds, thousands, and sometimes millions of termites work and live together.

There are two main types of termites that attack structures here in Florida.

This is the 3rd of 7 Tips to Prevent Termites from Eating You Out of House & Home which can be downloaded for FREE from my library of eBooks.

Disclaimer: I am a professionally trained termite exterminator. On this particular issue, I am CLEARLY biased. 🙂 With that said, I still believe that it’s important to empower you to learn how to exterminate termites, should you choose to do it yourself.

There are two common treatment methods that exterminators will use. If you can get your hands on either of these treatments, I wish you the best of luck. But I will say that termite inspections and treatment methods can be highly specialized procedures, so be extremely careful. Otherwise leave it up to a QualityPro certified termite exterminator who has specific tools and techniques for inspection and application of materials.

Subterranean termite treatments are generally broken down into two categories:

Flying Termites

This is the 2nd of 7 Tips to Prevent Termites from Eating You Out of House & Home which can be downloaded for FREE from my library of eBooks.

Learning the difference between flying termites and flying ants during the Spring swarming season in Florida can be difficult. Often, winged ants can resemble the winged-swarming termite.

For example, BOTH termites and ants…

  • Are small with 6 legs, a head, thorax, and abdomen
  • Have species that can be tiny or big
  • Have queens who lay eggs and kings who fertilize them
  • Have a worker caste who do most of the running around and hauling
  • Have soldiers who defend the nest

Now, when it comes to species, ants far outnumber termites in the variety. There are about 4,000 species of termites, but ants have close to 14,000!

Although they have many similarities, ants and termites do have some distinctive differences. If you know these differences, it is actually quite easy to decipher flying termites from flying ants and you won’t even need a microscope.

When the bug is standing relatively still, look for these characteristics.

Pictures of termites (Two Queens and Workers)

This is the 1st of 7 Tips to Prevent Termites from Eating You Out of House & Home which can be downloaded for FREE from my library of eBooks.

During the course of this series, you’ll see many pictures of termites (like the one above) so if you get grossed out easily, you may find it difficult to read the rest of my blog posts. You’ve been forewarned :). So before we launch into the wonderful world of termites, you should have a firm understanding of what these creatures are and the purpose they serve in nature.

Termites are social creatures who look out for their own, and are very family-centric. In fact, they live with several hundred to several million family members who all work together to find cellulose food sources that will grow the colony.

I’m sure you love your family as much as I love mine. But could you imagine living with that many family members? Ugh. 🙁

As you are probably aware, these little creatures can be very successful in their foraging efforts, using a cooperation called “swarm intelligence”. In fact, they are so successful in these food hunting systems that they can LITERALLY eat you out of house and home…hence the title of my new eBook.

A typical termite colony includes the following members:

The title says it all! Pest and termite Control is what we do best. It’s not a glamorous job but we’ve made a pretty good living at evicting pests from your home since 1978.
