If you live in Southwest Florida, you know that mosquito and noseeum control can be frustrating!
Have your cookouts been filled with that particular chorus of buzzing and slapping we all know?
How many of your evenings outdoors have ended with bites and stings? Sometimes it feels like we’re being eaten alive right here in paradise!
And while noseeums are just plain annoying, mosquitoes can be a serious threat to the health of you and your family by spreading diseases like West Nile Virus and the Chikungunya Virus (which was recently reported right here in Fort Myers).
Thankfully you have options in the battle to protect your family and control mosquitoes and noseeums on your property. Here are some landscaping tips on how you can keep them from ruining your family time outside…
The most important effort you can make is to manage the amount of standing water, so make sure your lawn has proper drainage leaving no place for water to collect and breed mosquitoes. If you see standing puddles of water in your yard, fill them in with dirt.
Females generally lay eggs in water, but also find places where they expect water to appear, like at the base of plants. These eggs can survive dry conditions for several months and hatch as soon as they come into contact with water. Squirmy mosquito larvae are a frequent sight in stagnant pools across our area.
It’s imperative that you eliminate any locations where water may collect, such as:
- upright buckets
- kiddie pools
- rain gutters
- plastic tarps
Drain, rinse, and refill bird baths and potted plant trays at least once a week. Be sure that the water in your swimming pool is treated and circulating.
You may want to replace your outdoor lights with yellow bulbs that are designed to attract fewer insects than standard bulbs.
Finally, you can contact the professionals to achieve total mosquito and noseeum control around your home.
Consider installing a mosquito misting system if you’re serious about keeping BOTH mosquitoes and noseeums at bay. This easy-to-use, remote controlled set-up blends in with your landscape and allows for pest-free outdoor activity, so you and your family can enjoy the outdoors.
Larue’s Mosquito Reduction Program is designed to significantly reduce the mosquito population on your property by identifying key mosquito breeding sites. Then applying control products to mosquito harborage areas monthly from April though October.
We’d be happy to help you get out and enjoy summer more, pest free!
