As if we didn’t have enough to worry about, now there are teenage mutant ninja termites roaming South Florida?

OK, so maybe they aren’t exactly teenage ninjas, but hybrid “super-termites” they could be!

You’ve heard me say time and time again that termites cost nearly $5 billion in damage every year – more than fire, storms and earthquakes combined, but that number may soon change… and not for the better!

The Asian and Formosan species of subterranean termites are not native to Florida and are two of the most destructive termite species in the world. It’s been a challenge learning how to control termites of these species because of how quickly each of them multiply on their own, but now researchers are saying that the hybrid colonies are reproducing at nearly double the rate!

Could your home have termites?

You may not be aware of subterranean termites in your home until they’ve caused severe damage, reducing floor joists and load-bearing beams to the equivalent of cardboard.

That’s why it’s extremely rewarding when we’re able to protect against a termite infestation with early detection during a routine inspection!

Recently our service tech, Chip Beatty, was inspecting for ants in the shrubs outside a home in Fort Myers, when he stumbled across live termites feeding on an ixoria plant. 7 Tips to Prevent Termites from Eating You Out of House and Home

In the past we’ve heard our customers say “I live in a concrete block house. I don’t have to worry about termites.” Or “I live in a suburban area. We don’t have termites near our home.”

My response is usually the same. What are the rafters of your roof made of? Usually the response is the same: Wood. Termites don’t care if you live in a cow town or if you live in the “burbs.” They are equal opportunity wood eaters.

Over the past few months we have given you a few helpful pointers on how you can reduce your exposure to subterranean termites and the severe damage that they can inflict upon your homestead.

Termite extermination is not a pretty business. In fact, many people despise the thought of creepy crawlies, let alone trying to rid them from their houses. But we’ve been in the Fort Myers pest control business since 1978 and we’re happy to help you get rid of termites. Here’s what you should know about subterranean termites:

There is a Nobel Prize winning scientist named Steven Chu that has discovered a termite control method that turns them from being home eating pests, to a limitless fuel source. He’s not claiming that termites can save the world. However, he does believe that they can lead to cheap, clean-burning, and virtually limitless fuel.

The US Department of Energy is currently researching ways to replace fossil fuels with renewable sources of cleaner energy. Termites are considered a possible way to reach this goal through something called metagenomics (the study of metagenomes, genetic material recovered directly from environmental samples).

So, how is it possible to turn these pests into power sources?
