iStock 000000620938XSmall #3: Naples Lawn Care Get Those Grub Worms Before it’s Too Late

This is the 3rd installment in “11 Ways to Ensure You Have the Greenest, Healthiest Lawn in Your Neighborhood which can be downloaded for FREE from our library of eBooks.

Grubs are small, “C”-shaped bugs that eat grass roots. They can cause additional damage by making small tunnels through the root area. When grubs hurt the roots, they make it more difficult for your grass to absorb water and nutrients. This can make your grass more susceptible to drought and other problems. Naples lawn care will definitely be needed and the longer you wait the more costly it can become.

If that wasn’t bad enough, grubs are also tasty treats for raccoons and armadillos. These unwanted guests will…

As I talked about in my previous post, we’re in the midst of rainy season…

Florida Summer Thunderstorm Mosquitoes 300x199 The Two Types of Mosquitoes Found in Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Naples & all of SW Florida

…and the mosquitoes are out in force!

I thought it’d be interesting to review the two types of mosquitoes found in Southwest Florida:

  1. Freshwater Mosquitoes
  2. Salt Marsh Mosquitoes

Freshwater mosquitoes require standing water to lay their eggs, and if it doesn’t rain enough to allow for water to remain stagnant for several days – their population doesn’t grow exponentially.

However, with salt marsh mosquitoes, they lay their eggs in the ground, and as the tide comes in, the eggs hatch.

Freshwater mosquitoes are generally found near fresh water sources like lakes, ponds, and some of the ‘summer only’ water reservoirs around Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Naples, and generally all of Southwest Florida.

The coastal areas generally have the most exposure to the salt marsh mosquito, areas like the southwest section of Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers Beach, Bonita Beach, Naples (by the beach), Sanibel and Captiva islands.

Reducing stagnant fresh water sources is a great way to cut down on the freshwater mosquito population, although due to the amount of rainfall we experience in summer, that can be hard to do.  In terms of the salt marsh mosquito population, there isn’t much that can be done in general, however, we do have solutions for your property.

If you’ve been to the any of the area parks in Southwest Florida in the last few weeks, you’ve probably noticed…

Mosquito Control Fort Myers Naples and Cape Coral Mosquito Control How to protect you and your family

…mosquitoes are out, and they’re out in force!

Even though we had a late start to rainy season, when it came in latter part of June, so did the mosquitoes.

It’s important to me that you know how to protect you and your family from mosquitoes, and with that in mind, here are simple guidelines:

  • Don’t go outdoors at dusk and dawn, if you can help it, because that’s when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Assure your clothing covers all of your skin to protect against bites.
  • Empty any open stagnant water containers around your home, and property, as they are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
  • Protect your skin & clothing with mosquito repellent, DEET or Picaridin work best again mosquitoes (keep in mind, the Centers of Disease Control says repellents containg DEET do not present a health concern, however, the American Academy of Pediatricians do not recommend using DEET on children younger than 2 years old).

If you have an infant, it’s recommended to use netting over carriers and strollers, and not apply any kind of repellent.

Enjoy summer, but be sure to protect you and your family with these tips for mosquito control!
